From the Director
Grit to GREAT! I mentioned during Back-to-School Night in August that we will be focusing on helping all students become ‘grittier’ this year. What is grit you ask? Grit is defined as: Perseverance, passion, and stamina for long-term goals. Kids today, many of them, seem to give up easily…they want problems solved instantly, obstacles removed from their path immediately, and they seem at a loss for what to do when life throws them a curve ball.
During October, our character trait of the month is Determination, which I think we can all agree is an important component of grit. Determination speaks specifically to the ability to stay focused on a goal, regardless of the opposition. We will touch on grit this month through our character activities, and I encourage all parents to use our monthly table tent to jump-start home-based discussions about the importance of determination and grit. As parents and school staff, we must work together to help our students develop the skills and the resolve to persevere in tough situations?
Below are two links to articles about GRIT. One speaks to the importance of instilling a ‘growth mindset’ in our children, rather than a ‘fixed mindset’, and the other focuses on what to look for in determining if you have grit. I found both interesting and I hope you will too. Periodically, throughout the school year, I will share additional articles and information I come across that shed some light on this important task of helping kids develop more grit. Conversely, if you come across articles or resources on GRIT that you think other parents might benefit from, please pass them along to me and I will share with the rest of the parent community here at PCK. Let’s work together to help all students become ‘grittier’ this year!
