From The Director

The cold and flu season is hitting Douglas County with a vengeance, and PCK is not immune.  This week we have seen absences spike, particularly in kindergarten and first grade, but there are also students in other grades with reported illnesses. Our School Nurse has reviewed each of the reported cases and has confirmed a few positive cases of Influenza A or B and strep throat, along with other presumed viruses. Symptoms of these “other” viral illnesses include:

  • A respiratory illness with fever, sore throat, cough and runny nose. This illness has kept students sick for 2-5 days. Some students with this illness were tested for Influenza since symptoms are similar but were negative for Influenza.
  • A stomach-related illness with stomach ache, fever, occasional vomiting (maybe just once) and headache. This illness seems to be lasting 2-3 days.

We strongly encourage parents to monitor your children closely and, when in doubt, to err on the side of caution and keep them home if they have any of the aforementioned symptoms, even if they do not have a fever.  Today we sent home 13 students with fever and other symptoms. Please remember that students with a fever must stay home for 24 hours after the fever has gone away without fever-reducing medication. Students who have vomiting must also stay home for 24 hours after they last vomited.

As you can imagine, several staff members are also struggling to stay healthy, and we are asking staff to adhere to the same protocols before returning to school after being sick. Additionally, the school is being diligent with cleaning, especially in the classrooms with many ill students, and is making arrangements for a deeper disinfecting cleaning over the next few days.

According to our nurse, the best things we can do to reduce the spread of illness is to wash hands frequently, and stay home when sick and until the fever and/or vomiting is gone for 24 hours.

Also, when calling in your child’s absence, please leave as much detail about the illness as possible. This helps us track the different illnesses and where they are in our building.

Thank you for your cooperation as we do everything in our power to keep both students and staff healthy during this peak in the cold/flu season.
