From The Director

Dear PCK Parents,

I really do not want all of my Director’s Letters this year to be about COVID-19! So, if you will indulge me with just a few sentences about COVID today, I promise to shift to my ‘real’ message for the remainder of my letter.

Update: As you may know, Douglas County moved to the RED level on the COVID Status Dial yesterday. While obviously concerning, I was happy to see that Governor Polis is still encouraging schools to remain open to in-person learning, in a way that works best for each school community and also keeps people safe. I believe we can do that here at PCK, but we all need to do our part. Prior to returning on 11/30, I will send out a brief health status survey to all PCK families. The responses received will help us assess the overall (COVID) health of our community going into the final three weeks of our first semester. If you would be so kind as to fill it out (1 per family) on Friday, November 27, we would appreciate it. If you have any questions about possible exposures over the break, please contact our school nurse, Debbie Smith at Thank you.

Now, the real message…

Every year at Thanksgiving, I like to spend some time reflecting on all that I’m thankful for over the past year. At the top of my list is always my husband, my daughters and son-in-law, my extended family and dear friends, my health, and the fact that I live here in beautiful Colorado! I am also incredibly thankful for:

  • The privilege of working at PCK, in a role that I love and find so fulfilling both personally and professionally.
  • All the precious students that attend PCK, from our darling preschoolers to our amazing 8th graders, and all the dedicated students at each grade level in between!
  • The talented and hard-working staff at PCK, without whom this outstanding school would not be possible!
  • Every PCK parent that regularly sacrifices time and talents to volunteer at school for the benefit of our students and program.
  • Every PCK parent who generously supports our efforts financially or with in-kind donations.
  • Our beautiful facility that safely houses our students and provides countless opportunities for them to learn and grow.
  • For all the smiles, hugs, cards, letters, notes, and emails that offer support and encouragement in challenging times.
  • For the gift of ‘wonder’ that abounds in our building, and the depth of kindness I see so freely extended to those in need by the PCK community.
  • A year, while challenging, that also provided the opportunity to simplify, reflect and re-prioritize what is truly important.

This Thanksgiving, from my heart to yours, I wish you all a Thanksgiving Day that is spent with those you hold dear, reflecting upon all that you share and all that you are thankful for this past year.

Happy Thanksgiving,

Mrs. Aplin

Easy Access To The Absence Form

If your student is absent for any reason during remote learning, please submit an absence form each day your child is out. The form is available in the slider on the PCK home page.

Special Lessons From Our Specials Teachers

Use these lessons to supplement and enrich remote learning as your student is able. Elementary students are not graded on Specials lessons during remote learning.

After learning what to do, step away from the computer and create a color wheel based on objects found around the house or outdoors. Watch this video first for instructions. No need to submit to Google Classroom, just have some fun.  You can also make a figure sculpture out of tin foil. Get the details here.

There are fun art projects for each grade level on the Art page. Students can also watch the following videos to learn more about different artists.

6th: Andy Warhol and Pop Art
5th: Michelangelo and Renaissance Art
4th: Mary Cassatt
3rd: Matisse
2nd: Van Gogh
1st: Linnea in Monet’s Garden
Kindergarten: Madeline in Paris

Discuss these lessons on simple ways to share kindness.

Elementary Science Lab
An optional science lab activity is posted on your classroom teacher’s Google Classroom site. Enrichment activities are meant to replace the hands-on lesson your student would have completed during in-person science lab class, and are intended to support your student’s learning of concepts which have been introduced by the classroom teacher.

The PCK Music Department has been loading Google Classroom with fun resources all year and the students are well trained. Remote learning won’t slow us down! NO WAY!

When your students have a chance, send them to their Music Google classrooms. We’ve posted some supplemental activities that pair with what we’ve been working on in class, as well as some fun Thanksgiving Day songs.
