From The Director

It’s a wrap! The 2020-21 school year officially ended today, and I can almost hear the collective sigh of relief from our staff and community. We started the year with the goal of remaining open to in-person learning as long as we could manage, and we all worked so hard to make it happen. With the exception of a few days before Thanksgiving, we were open and welcoming our students into the building every day all year long. Thank you for being so conscientious about monitoring your child’s health and notifying our school nurse of any symptoms they may have experienced. This allowed us to enjoy one of our healthiest years in the building in a long time. In fact, we joked that no germ could survive with all of our health screening and cleaning protocols in place!

Once the students arrived each day, the PCK staff pulled out all the stops to make sure our students did not lag behind. Even our REO students, who worked diligently from afar, had the benefit of remote video instruction from PCK teachers in all core subjects. The teachers revamped lessons and assignments, our TTI team provided additional targeted support, and most of our Specials teachers traveled all around the building delivering art, music, tech, and Spanish in the classrooms in order to help us maintain our cohorts. Every effort was made to ensure all students continued to learn and grow despite the periodic disruptions (aka quarantines). As for the students, they amazed us with their indomitable spirits, their resiliency, and their ability to persevere in the face of new and changing circumstances. Even from behind masks, we could see their smiles and feel their energy. They wanted to be here…they needed to be here…and they were rock stars all year long. Wait until you hear about their amazing end-of-year MAP results!  🙂

With the 20-21 school year coming to an end, the time has come for me to say my final goodbyes to the students, staff, and parents of PCK. It has truly been my honor and privilege to serve the PCK community for the past nineteen years. You have the most wonderful children, each one dear and special in their own unique way. They have blessed me beyond measure every single day this past year. I love them, and I will miss them when I retire. I also want to thank you for your faith and trust in me, and for every act of kindness, encouragement, and generosity you so willingly gave. This was a difficult year to volunteer, but I know how much you all wanted to be here, volunteering your valuable time and talents. I have always appreciated your faithful commitment to PCK, and your desire to partner with us in providing the best possible education and school environment possible for our students. Thank you for everything you have done for me, for our students, and for the staff. PCK will forever be in my heart as it is truly a special place.

Today during the closing assembly with the students, I officially passed the torch to Mrs. Harth. I am confident our beloved school will continue to flourish as a shining beacon of academic excellence and strong character within Douglas County under the leadership of Mrs. Harth and Mr. Thompson. I leave with a full heart and the fondest of memories…#PCKproud!

With love and gratitude,

Mrs. Aplin

Students currently in kindergarten through 4th grade get to participate in this summer’s Reading Challenge! Students brought home all the information in their Thursday Folders, but in case the reading log gets misplaced, here is a digital version. There will be a drawing for a prize basket for each grade level.  Students who read at least six books AND 600 minutes are eligible to win. Students in 4th grade (going into 5th grade) are to select two books from this list.

If your student is looking for a great book, here are recommendations by grade level from our librarian, Mrs. Wright.

Looking For A Carpool For Next Year?

We partner with Way to Go to assist families with carpooling to and from school. PCK encourages carpooling for your convenience and to reduce the volume of cars going through our carpool lines.

We send our student roster to Way to Go, including parent and student names, grade levels, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses (the same information provided in our student directory).

Way to Go sends participating families information on accessing a personalized list and map identifying the families living closest to them. Your information will only be shared with PCK families. Way to Go will not sell it to other businesses, agencies, or third parties. Likewise, we ask families to treat the information with privacy.

There is no obligation to participate. This is simply a great resource to meet nearby PCK families.

If you would like to “opt out” of this process and not have your information sent to Way to Go, please complete this form to decline by June 15.

The Foundation Wants Your Feedback

The Foundation thanks each family again for your generosity this year. We asked a lot from you and we truly appreciate your support. A huge thank you to our parents, teachers, and staff for getting us through this crazy year! And a huge thank you to our sponsors for being flexible and generous with your contributions!

We tried some new fundraising ideas this year and we would love to hear your opinion. Please take a few minutes to complete our survey so we can best represent you next year.

The Foundation is currently seeking new members and volunteers for next year. If you are interested in joining us or looking for ways to meet your volunteer requirements, please contact Amy DeNicolo.

Keep Skills Sharp Over The Summer

PCK’s Summer Skills Sharpener Series gives students math and language arts support over the break in June and July. Whether your student needs help in these areas before moving on to the next grade level, or you want to prevent the dreaded “summer slide,” these classes can make a big difference for kids. Get the details here.

From Our School Nurse

Hello PCK families,

I will be retiring from PCK at the end of this school year. My husband and I are both decreasing our work hours in order to prepare for the ultimate goal of full retirement. I will miss PCK in so many ways and feel honored to have worked with many families, helping to advocate for your students’ health needs at school. I am so grateful for the staff at PCK that has always been willing to collaborate with me and support the health needs of students. I could never have done my job without the wonderful health assistants, Sara Mundt, Sandy Higgins, and Shera Mace.

I know that your students will be in great hands under the guidance and expertise of the new School Nurse Consultant, Jacenta Wirth RN, BSN, M.Ed. Please welcome Jacenta when you have the opportunity – PCK is lucky to have found her and I believe she will do PCK proud!  Jacenta is a School Nurse Consultant at another Parker area charter school and will now have two charter schools under her supervision. She can be reached at jwirth@ckcs.net.  Enjoy your summer! I sure appreciate your understanding and cooperation with the unusual and stringent guidelines that we have been under this year! Thank you.

News From Our Littlest Learners

To all of you from all of us, we wish you a joy-filled, super fun summer! See you next year!

Making Art From Science

Students in 2nd grade art class got to visit the ducklings in our science lab and draw them. They loved observing our feathered friends in a new, artistic light.

Remote Learning Can Be Fun and Tasty

While first grade was quarantined recently, Mrs. Miller and Miss Pie gave a lesson on measurements and doubling measurements while baking cookies. Some students followed the recipe with their parents at home, and everyone got a sweet treat when they came back to school.

Thank You

Thank you to the Parekh family for bringing our staff delicious, hot, Krispy Kreme donuts. They were amazing!

A huge thanks to the Chaffin family for bringing breakfast burritos from Twisters (an office team favorite) for all of our staff. What a tasty way to start the day!

We love Kelly Anderson’s cookies and are so thankful she treated us to her fabulous baking one last time before the end of the year. We don’t know how we’ll make it through the summer without her goodies!

Thank you to the Hunt family for the wonderful Crumbl cookies they brought for our office staff. They were a big hit and disappeared quickly!

Have a fantastic summer! See you in August!
