From The Director

Welcome Back PCK parents, and a special welcome to all of our new families. The 2018-19 school year is already shaping up to be one of our best yet. I must admit that it did my heart good to see all our students with their smiling faces, fresh haircuts and new shoes coming through the school doors yesterday! There is a strong, dynamic energy flowing through our buildings again.

As this is our first week back to school, I have a few items to bring to your attention:

  1.  Carpool – thank you for honoring your assigned carpool time and arriving within (but not early for) your carpool window. This helps ensure a smoother, more efficient carpool flow for all carpool waves. As always, your patience during the first few weeks as everyone adjusts to the routine and flow of carpool again is much appreciated. Many of our youngest students are brand new and learning the ropes. Two reminders based on what we observed yesterday…First, please keep the green, yellow or red carpool name card displayed in your windshield all the way through the line. This will help your child and his/her teacher more easily identify your car. Second, if you have younger siblings or babies in the back seat, please position them on the left side (behind the driver), leaving the right side rear entry clear for your child to load/unload. We never load/unload students on the left, driver side for safety reasons. Similarly, please remain in the vehicle at all times; if needed, one of our carpool workers will assist your child in and out.
  2.  Back-to-School Night(s) – is just around the corner, so please mark your calendar. This is an important ‘parents only’ information night, and we hope you will make every effort to attend. As with any all-school event, we try to facilitate parking for everyone, which is why our Back-to-School Nights fall over four separate evenings. In addition to the information the teachers will share, I have a special request that you make a point to attend the General session in the gym. I know it is tempting to say, ‘Oh, I’ve heard all that before’, and then skip the general session, but truly this is the one time per year that the PCK Board and I have to get in front of parents and share our priorities for the coming year. This year’s meeting schedule is as follows:

Grades 5-8: Thursday, August 23 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Grades 3&4: Tuesday, August 28 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.

Grades 1&2: Wednesday, August 29 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.

Kindergarten (ALL): Thursday, August 30 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.

  1.  Construction on Pine Dr. – Some of you have called us to inquire about the cones and signs indicating a new construction project on Pine Dr. I contacted Douglas County to get more information and here is what I learned. The county is planning to narrow the median and add an ‘Acceleration Lane’ on the west side of Pine Drive. This is to help residents of the Homestead Hills area make a safer left hand turn (Southbound) on to Pine Dr. The county does not anticipate there will be any disruption Northbound on Pine, and they project this will be a short-term construction project…1-2 weeks tops. Additionally, they have requested the construction company doing the work not work during carpool hours (fingers crossed on this one as they admit they have very limited control once the project begins.)

As always, as we move into the school year, should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me. I am always happy to meet with you.

Here’s to a GREAT 2018-19!

Bring Smiles For Picture Day Tomorrow

Our kindergarten – 5th grade students have picture day tomorrow, August 17. You do not need to fill out a form prior to picture day. Approximately 2 weeks after picture day, your proof will be sent home with instructions on how to view your picture(s) online and how to place your order. All orders will be shipped directly to your home.

Please do NOT have your student wear green on picture day. It will interfere with the green-screen backdrop. Students may dress up or wear the PCK uniform.

Break Out Your Running Shoes

We are looking forward to kicking off the year with one of our students’ favorite events – the FunD Run! This is not only a fun day for our students, but it is also a time we encourage a healthy, fit lifestyle and raise money for our school. We will have a FunD Run assembly next Friday, and will run on Friday, September 7. Get the details here.

NJHS Welcomes New Middle School Students At FUSION Event

The 2018-2019 NJHS (National Junior Honor Society) at PCK will be one you will never forget. This year NJHS is really looking forward to volunteering as much they can in and out of the school. The officers’ first event happened this summer as they ran their annual FUSION event on July 11th for new middle school students. NJHS invited all the new students to the school to get to know them a little better, and also get them comfortable with their new school. The event was a success! NJHS members got to know the students better and had a fun time. PCK is welcoming a total of 10 new students in middle school this year. During FUSION, the students played some fun icebreakers and also new students got a tour of the school. NJHS is grateful for all of the students who came to welcome the new students. Thank you to Mrs. Bender for all she did to make this event happen!

Congratulations to Our Newest Black Belt

PCK 6th grader Lance Goode earned his black belt in Taekwondo at the end of June. It was a tough 3-hour-long test, but he did a great job. Way to go, Lance!
