From The Director

Dear PCK Parents,

I am looking forward to seeing you at our Back-to-School Nights this week and next. The teachers are also eager to have you visit with them in their classrooms to learn more about what they have planned for your students this year.  Good communication between home and school is an essential piece of our recipe for student success here at PCK, and Back-to-School Night is a very important start to that process.  Each year there is new information to share, new staff to meet, and a new partnership to begin.

Along those lines, I also support strong communication between home and school, and one way I do this is by writing a Director Letter each week for our Thursday news.  I typically write about topics of interest to parents (or so I think) or share other general information related to school operations and events, but I would really like to tailor my pieces to topics that are truly of interest or usefulness to parents. To that end I could use your input. What topics would you like to hear more about this year?  Have you ever wondered about a certain policy or practice here at PCK, but have never asked? These are potentially great topics for my weekly Director Letter, and I would be happy to elaborate.

If you have a topic or two in mind, with broad parent interest/applicability, please email your suggestions to me at taplin@ckcs.net.  I am happy to compile a list and start addressing pressing topics for parents as early as next week.  Then, throughout the year, I will intersperse these topics with my regular school-based operational, academic and event driven communications.

Finally, in the spirit of strong and open communication between home and school, please do not hesitate to reach out with questions/concerns that may be more specific to your child.  I am always happy to meet with parents — feel free to stop by my office, call or email at your convenience.

See you at Back-to-School Night!

Mrs. Aplin

Use These Carpool Tips for a Speedy Drop Off/Pick Up

Thank you for your continued patience as our carpool process gets smoother each day. There is always a learning curve each year as everyone gets used to their new carpool windows and processes.

Here are a few tips to help our carpool continue to improve:

  • Please pull as far forward as you can in the south loop. Do not stop to let your child in/out of the car until you are as far forward as possible.
  • Please make sure your children are ready to hop out, with their backpacks and other belongings, when you stop in the morning.
  • Only stop once in the morning and have all of your riders get out (this is mainly an issue on the south loop).
  • Student backpacks must ride in the main cabin of the car. Do not have your students open the trunk/back of the car to get their belongings unless they have special projects that don’t fit in the main cabin of the car.
  • On the north loop, you may not turn left into the parking lot in the afternoon unless you are parking and staying at the school for a meeting or appointment.

We hope these tips help the carpool process go more quickly and smoothly for all families.

NJHS Is Tutoring!

PCK’s Middle School NJHS (National Junior Honor Society) members will be available to tutor students in kindergarten through 6th grade starting September 10th. The cost is $10 per student/tutoring session. They will tutor students in K-3, and help 4th, 5th, and 6th graders on projects.

Parents can contact NJHS at njhs@ckcs.net to schedule a tutoring session. In the email, please include the day of the school week and a time slot you would like. The times NJHS students are available to tutor are: 3:15-4:15, 3:30-4:30, or 3:45-4:45 Monday-Friday. Include your student’s teacher’s name and indicate which subject is the main area of focus: Math, Language, Science, Social Studies, or general organization and homework completion. Tutoring will be held at PCK. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs.Bender at lbender@ckcs.net. You can also contact her if your middle school student needs tutoring as well.

Are You Ready To PARTY?

The annual PCK Pool Party, sponsored by our PTA, is this Saturday, August 25, from 6:30-8:30 pm. Come for the fun at H2O’Brien Pool at 10795 Victorian Drive in Parker. This is a free event for your family. Feel free to bring a picnic dinner or purchase food at the snack bar. *Please note: Parents MUST accompany non-swimmers in the pool.

PCK Cares

Last weekend 67 PCK middle school students and 50 of their parents helped pack food for Feed my Starving Children. During the 3 shifts worked by PCK Cares members, our team joined with other members of the community to pack over 174,000 meals, enough to feed 479 children everyday for a year. Great job students and parents! Special thanks to Susan Bennett for organizing our participation in this event and for proving these numbers.

Join The Fun At Lunch

Have you ever:

 – Wondered who your child sits with at lunch?

 – Wished you could get a sneak-peek at your child during the day?

 – Wanted to work part-time, at an amazing place like PCK, on the same days your child is at school?

If you answered “yes” to any of those questions, then we have the answer for you! Our hot lunch provider, Wholesome Food Services, is hiring lunch servers for PCK. If you would love to work at the school during lunch, this is a great opportunity. Please contact Kathy Keithline at kathy@wholesomefoodservices.com for more information.

Looking For A Shutterbug

picture of a cameraWe need a volunteer to take photographs at our monthly Character Assemblies, typically the first Friday of the month from 8:10 – 8:45. If you are interested, please contact Dianne Daniels at ddaniels@ckcs.net. You do not need to be a trained photographer (feel free to use the camera on your cell phone). If you are available and willing, you are qualified!

Congratulations, Summer Readers!

Last week we recognized Emery K., Quinn S., TJ M., Sienna Z., Ayush P., and Sawyer W. as the winners of the Summer Read Bingo game. These students read enough books to complete a “blackout” and their names were entered in the drawing. Prizes included a Kindle in 6th grade, and theme baskets with books and treats for the other grades. We want all our students reading during the summer months and the Summer Bingo Game is a fun way to keep them encouraged.
